Genre Analysis (Horror) - BFI Statistical Yearbook

BFI Statistical Yearbook - Genre Information

In order to collect data on the Horror genre, I have looked over the BFI's 2014 Statistical Yearbook as it is reliable and has all the accessible figures on UK film and the British film industry.

The table below shows the films sold the most ranked by Gross Box Office.
      Analysis
As you can see in the table above, Horror wasn't classed as the most popular in 2014.
·         Horror was ranked as the 11th most grossed with the film Annabelle with £22.9 million.
·         Only 29 horror films were released which amounts to 4.1% of the releases in 2014.
·         The top performing horror film of 2014 was Annabelle which was a prequel to The Conjuring.
·         Horror films were not very popular in 2014 as it is not included in the 'Gender Difference' table.

Significance
Horror movies are not very admired within the British public as it is always seemed as a repetitive storyline. In 2014, Annabelle was the most popular horror film and for our film, we intend on making it similar, so building up tension and creating unexpected moments. We, as a group, will have to consider the most age appropriate target audience for our task. As most horror films are aged 15 or over, we decided that will be our main audience and we will appeal to both genders.
     The Registrar General's Social Scale
This is the way the British Government defines the population through their profession. It can help companies to target audiences but has been criticized in the past for being basic.
